Most breeds of wild salmon will have a natural pink, orange or reddish colour to the meat. This beautiful colour is created by antioxidants called carotenoids. Studies have found carotenoids to have anti-cancer properties. As schools of wild salmon make their way home to Ireland’s shores, they fatten themselves with the krill and tiny shellfish which is found in abundance in the Atlantic ocean. Their natural food source has a high concentration of these carotenoids. As they eat the shellfish, these rich antioxidants are absorbed into the salmon.

Increased Omega-3 Fatty Acids

We all know that Omega-3 is important. Another fatty acid called Omega-6 is also important for your health. Medical research indicates that Omega-3 and Omega-6 compete in your body. This means that if promoting better health is your primary concern, sticking to wild salmon is the way to go. If cost is also a consideration but will still want to pack a bigger health punch, organic farmed salmon can be an alternative.
